Guide Review – Baby Draw

By Donna Pilato, Entertaining Guide

This is the kind of fun, easy, interactive party game that will immediately break the ice at your next baby shower. It can be played as a traditional charades game, or as a drawing charades game. Words are assigned a point value depending on their difficulty to communicate. For example, “playpen” will only earn your team one point, whereas a word such as “bonding” will reward you with five. With over 100 words from which to select, this game can be played as long as you need to fill time at your party. And chances are, with all the laughs it will generate, your guests won’t want to stop.

Baby Pictionary Game
— Pregnancy Magazine, June 2003 (print version)

Pregnancy Magazine CoverCould you draw “amniocentesis”? How about “bouncy seat”? And how in the world would you draw “bonding”? Guests and the mom-to-be will have a ball trying to figure it out when they’re playing Baby Draw, a unique new baby shower game.

Similar to Pictionary (only a lot cuter!) each team tries to draw the item on the card they pick before the one-minute timer runs out. Each item has a point value based on the difficulty. All the host needs to provide are pencils and paper – cards, timer and full instructions are all in the box!

What a great way to break the ice and liven up a baby shower. But don’t let the fun stop there! The game can be played again and again, and can even help get the family more involved. Older children will enjoy learning more about what items are needed for their new brother and sister (though it may be a good idea to remove more technical cards such as “amniocentesis,” “epidural” and “contractions”). Can you imagine the giggles when it’s their turn to draw a “poopy diaper” or a “burp”? Any mother-to-be would love to have Baby Draw be a part of their important day. And if most of the guests are intimidated because they can’t even draw a stick figure, use the cards to play Charades!

READY, SET, DRAW!
— BabyTalk, October 2001 (print version)

Baby Talk Magazine CoverAfter baby arrives, there won’t be much time for playing games. So have fun now with Baby Draw from Swack Enterprises. The Pictionary-like game is a surefire icebreaker at a baby shower. Guests are paired up, then each team draws words such as breastfeeding or craving. If players don’t feel like drawing, the same game can be played as traditional charades. You get 123 playing cards, a one-minute timer, and instructions.

Ready, Set, Draw!
— Memphis Parent, February 2003 (print version)

Memphis ParentTired of playing the same silly games at baby showers? Then check out Baby Draw. This Pictionary-like game of charades is a great icebreaker. And all you need is a little creativity! Simply draw a picture of a crib or pacifier while your teammates try to guess it; whoever gets the most points wins.

Game developer Patricia Swackhamer says giving birth to her idea was easy. “We were having a shower with a group of guys and all we had were old party games like taking labels off of baby food jars and tasting to guess what’s inside. They aren’t funny – or fun. So I made up cards with words on them and had people draw the word from the card,” says Swackhamer, a mother of two. “Everyone had so much fun, many suggested we actually make the game.”

As luck would have it, Swackhamer discovered a game manufacturer in the San Francisco Bay Area where she resides, and they produced it in 1999. She now does a brisk online business at www.babydraw.com, in addition to selling Baby Draw through specialty shops in 14 states. So sharpen your pencils; the game sells for $11.95.
