Featured Product: Baby Draw Baby Shower Game
Patricia Swackhamer was tired of the same old Baby Shower games that existed on the market. She wanted her party guests to feel engaged and most importantly to have FUN! Watch her video to see how the game is played and read her interview below to learn more.
Mom Invented: Please tell us about your game.
Patricia: Baby Draw is a Pictionary-like charades game that comes packaged and ready-to-play for unlimited fun. It is the baby shower game that gets people mingling and out of their seats. Baby Draw includes complete instructions, a one-minute timer and more than 120 playing cards (for big crowds or repeated use!)
Mom Invented: What inspired you to create it?
Patricia: I was hosting a baby shower for my best friend and needed to entertain a diverse group of guests. We all loved to play Pictionary, so I created cards with just one topic: babies. It was such a big hit that people told me I should turn it into a product. It was 1999 and there were few shower games on the market and most hostesses were having to make their own. The timing was perfect to introduce a ready-made game.
Mom Invented: What’s the biggest mistake you’ve experienced in this process? How did you overcome it?
Patricia: The shape of our box was our biggest faux-pas! I thought the box would hang nicely next to cards and invitations, but because we have so many cards we should have stacked them side-by-side to distribute the weight evenly in a flatter package. Thankfully, we were able to overcome this through online sales where images are used to display the product, but in brick-and-mortar stores the display gets tricky.
Mom Invented: What has been your greatest success in this process?
Patricia: Early on I sent the game out to editors of national magazines and they were very responsive. We received favorable write-ups in Baby Talk, Pregnancy Magazine, and About.com gave the game a 4-star rating. It’s also been gratifying to get feedback from customers telling us about ways they have played the game, including parent educators who said they use it as an icebreaker before starting class. Who knew!
